Frequently Asked Questions

  • Hairy Odd Mother Studio is located inside Sola Salons in Puyallup, Washington.

Sola Salons is in the Meridian Place Shopping Center between The Rock Wood Fired Pizza and Iron Chef. Les Schwab is located across the street.

If your GPS takes you to Michaels, you’re on the opposite side of the shopping center.

Dani’s studio is Studio 4, the first studio on the left.

  • When you arrive, Studio 4 will be the first studio on the left.

If the door is open, feel free to come right in. If Dani is finishing up with another client, you can relax in the Sola lounge area (the blue chairs are extra comfy).

Inside the studio you'll find water, coffee, tea, sodas, and a variety of snacks available during your visit.

If you need the restroom, turn left from the front door and head down the hall to the last door on the left.

  • For best results, arrive with your hair generally clean. Washing your hair 24–48 hours before your appointment is perfect.

It also helps if your hair is lightly detangled and worn down so Dani can see how your hair naturally falls around your face and head.

  • Gray coverage focuses on fully covering gray hair with a consistent, rich color.

If you prefer your hair to look like a solid shade with no visible grays, gray coverage is typically the best option.

Gray blending creates a softer, more dimensional approach to working with natural gray hair.

There are several ways Dani may approach gray blending depending on your hair and goals. Sometimes this may include a gloss to add warmth or richness. Other times it may involve a combination of lighter and deeper tones to create natural looking dimension that harmonizes with your natural grays.

Gray blending can also be combined with partial coverage, where certain areas are covered while others are blended to create a more seamless result.

Maintenance for gray blending typically falls between 9–16+ weeks, depending on your desired look.

Maintenance for gray coverage appointments usually falls around every 4–8 weeks depending on how quickly your hair grows.

  • The ideal shampoo schedule depends on your hair type and scalp.

For most people, shampooing every 3–5 days works well.

If you have dry, curly, or thick hair, once a week may be perfect. If your hair is fine or soft, shampooing every 2–4 days may work better.

Ultimately, listen to your hair and scalp and wash when it feels right.

  • In the Pacific Northwest climate, using a deep conditioner or hair mask is very helpful for maintaining healthy, shiny hair.

Fine hair typically benefits from deep conditioning every three shampoos. Medium to coarse hair usually benefits from deep conditioning every other shampoo.

For damaged, curly, or very dry hair, using a deep conditioner every shampoo can make a big difference.

  • Always start brushing from the ends and work your way up to prevent breakage.

Brushes with flexible bristles work best. Wet Brush and Framar brushes are great options.

For straight to wavy hair, gently brush before washing and detangle after with a wide tooth comb or detangling spray if needed.

For curly hair, it’s best to gently separate tangles with your fingers first, then detangle with conditioner using a wide tooth comb.

  • Tight ponytails can cause breakage, especially around the hairline.

Whenever possible, keep ponytails loose and gently remove hair ties by unlooping them rather than pulling them out of your hair.

  • Instead of rubbing your hair with a towel, gently squeeze out excess water.

You can use a microfiber hair towel, a soft hair-safe towel, or even a cotton t-shirt to gently scrunch moisture out of the hair.
